History/Folklore: In China this herb is taken internally or applied externally. For external use, they would mix powdered herb with Sesame Seed Oil and applied it to scalds and burns.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the root is cooked just above ten minutes to reduce the purgative actions and for over 30 minutes to increase its ability to clear heat.
The root can be used as a substitute for Walnut in making fabric dyes.
