History/Folklore: This herb is commonly known as Buckthorn. In the 1600's it was finally recognized as a medicinal, outside China and Native Americans who had been using it for a long time before then. During that time it as well known for its treatment of constipation, and wasn’t until the 1800's that it was recognized as a drug for constipation and bowel disorders in the U.S.
The herb got its name, Cascara Sagrada, from the Spanish explorers and means “Sacred bark”.
