History/Folklore: Schisandra has long been used in China by women to promote healthy fertility as well as a youthful look. It's Chinese Name, Wu Wei Zi, means Five (5) Flavour Fruit, and is due to the belief it carries the energetics of all 5 Major Flavours, with each one corresponding to each of the 5 Zang/Yin Organs (Sour/Wood/LR, Sweet/Earth/Spleen, Acrid/Metal/Lung, Bitter/Fire/Heart and Salty/Water/Kidneys).
It is believed that small amounts help to stimulate the nervous system, while higher doses sedate the nervous system.
