History/Folklore: Calendula, commonly known as Pot Marigold, is widely known for its topical applications, but can also be used internally as well. The ancient Romans used it for scorpion stings, and gave it the name Calendula from the word calens, which means the first as the plant commonly bloomed on the first of the months.
It is also commonly used in mouth washes, throat gargles, and nasal wash to sooth tender mucous membranes.
This flower is commonly associated with the Virgin Mary, and later Queen Mary, and is used to make floral garlands that are worn during ceremonies associated with he Virgin Mary.
