History/Folklore: Sarsaparilla has long been used in Folk and Traditional medicine where it is found (Virginia, Honduras and further into the Southern American Countries, Jamaica, and India). The settlers that came to the East Coast learned of its medicinal properties from the Native Americans and was quickly incorporated into Western Medicine and Appalachian Folk medicine. It is believed that it was actually the Peruvians that first founded its use for pain relief.
