History/Folklore: Originally this herb was collected during the festival of Midsummer, which was later Christianized as St. John's Feast Day, June 24th. The Pagan traditions of using it to ward off evil spirits also carried over to the Christianized festival, where people place bunches of the herb over religious figures and paintings. This is where the name "Hypericum" comes from. "Hyper" refers to as 'above' and "eikon" meaning 'picture'. This property of the herb was so deeply rooted during the transition of Paganism to Catholicism, which lead to it having the other name of fuga daemonum, which roughly translates to "demon fighter".
It is believed that wearing or taking of this herb gives one courage and strength, but also recognize other magical practitioners. It was used to shed light within dark places, including within the mind and soul, due to the bright yellow of the flower. The Ancient Greeks and Romans both believed it was a symbol of Immortality, and the Romans also saw it as a symbol of royalty and victory.
The oil of the herb, as well as the herb itself, has been used for pain relief and healing of sword wounds since the Middle Ages.
