History/Folklore: It is believed that the Native Americans used the berries from the Juniper tree to supress their appetites during times of hunger, and some tribes even used it as a female contraceptive. They would also use the seeds from the inside of the berry as jewelry and decoration. Some tribes of the South West would collect the berries that had fallen on the ground and dried up to make jewelry to protect themselves from evil. This action was also done in Europe, where the branches and berries were used for protection and cleansing rituals The plant itself was planted around door entrances during the Middle Ages to protect them against Witches.
