History/Folklore: Once widely used internally, it was believed to be a remedy to Hemlock poisoning. In Western Medicine it is primarily used topically, while still used both highly as an internal and external medicine in China. There was once a time, where this resin was worth more than its weight in Gold, making it highly prized and studied. Throughout the ages, this resin has been mentioned in many Holy Texts. In Catholicism it was believed to be one of the gifts given to the baby Jesus by the Magi. The Babylonians, Assyrians, and Persians have all burnt it for ceremonial practices. This practice was also done in India and in Greece and Rome. In Jewish culture, it was one of the "four sweet scents", which comprised of 4 herbs ground together and burned.
This tree was so sacred, that in Arabia, it was believed that the trees were all guarded by winged-serpents, protecting it from wrong-doers.
In China, it has a name that means "calling back the soul fragrance", as it was used in many ceremonies that revolved around the dead. It was also used in many formulas that "moved blood" and was a common ingredient in formulas for Marital Artists.
