History/Folklore: The word elder comes from the Anglo-Saxon word aeld, which means "fire". This is believed to be due to the hollow core of the twigs, once the pith is removed, and was used possibly as pipes, or to make fire. This is a reason that it can commonly be known as "pipe tree" in European Countries. In Denmark it is believed that Hylde-Mother, Elder Mother, dwelt within the hollow parts of the leaves. She is the guardian of the Under-World, so this plant was commonly associated with the Under World, as were many plants with hollow stems. Because of this, in the Olde days, it was common to have to ask permission to be able to cut down the Elderberry tree and use its wood; if not, calamity would fall upon the person. Another fable states that if you sit underneath an Elderberry Tree on Midsummer night, you would be met by the Fairy King himself, and his followers. Once asleep under the tree, your dreams would be filled with visions, weather fantastical or worrisome. The flowers are also of use from this plant, with some similar benefits, as well as others.
