Latin Name:  Cichorium intybus


Harvested: France, India


 History/Folklore: The leaves have long been used as a tonic in Europe and eaten in Salads and made into bitters. The root has been harvested for over 5'000 years, especially in ancient Egypt. It was used to cleanse to skin and body, and prepare the body for spring, and was also used as a feed for livestock. Today it is commonly used, roasted, as a coffee substituent.

The Native American Tribes of the United States have long used it as well. The Cherokee were known to use it as a Tonic, while the Iroquois used it as a wash for sores and infections.

Key Constituents: inulin (starch-like polysaccharide), coumarins, flavonoids, sesquiterpene lactones (lactucin and lactucopicrin), tannins, alkaloids, vitamins, minerals, and volatile oils
